Reduce breakage and growing long, healthy hair by doing a protective style properly

Before trying the protective style, I had literarily tried everything you can think of. (intensive regimens, vitamins, weekly hot oil treatments, constant deep conditioning, protein treatments, zero heat, expensive products, blood circulation techniques) but my hair never grew beyond shoulder length.

I had worried about the time and money I was investing in my hair without getting the desired results and it wasnt until a few years ago when I discovered the magic of protective styles that I was able to grow my hair way beyond my shoulders.

Everything changed when I realized this one thing about hair- if we want to grow hair, there isnt much we can do to let our hair grow faster from our scalp but in order to grow a longer hair, what we can do is to reduce how much our hair is breaking.

What this does is to increase the amount of hair that we are retaining and this allows us to get longer hair. Surprisingly, the best way to reduce the rate at which our hair is breaking is to leave it alone. Imagine a world where you never give your hair an opportunity to break. That world is the world of protective styling. By putting your hair up in a protective style makes it impossible for any breakage to occur while it is tucked up away. You can actually retain all of the growth that you are gaining throughout the duration of the protective style.

I genuinely believe that it is the best way of growing your hair if you are doing it correctly. You can still do wigs, weave, and box braids.

The biggest reason people don’t see longer hairs from protective style are:

1) They aren’t taking proper care of their hair. If a lot of breakages occur when you are taking your braids off, you will not retain the length that you have grown with your protective style. Take your time and don’t be too rough on your hair.

2) Remove the build-ups out of each of those box braids and carefully detangle your hair. Those types of protective styles will take a lot more patience to take down because there are more sections to detangle, more opportunity for tangle to exist. There are more chances for you to accidentally rip out your hair. You want to fully detangle your hair before you wash it.

In my opinion, the best protective style is the one that costs the lowest manipulation to take down!

3) Leave your protective style in for the right amount of time- I think the longer the better. Because every time that you put on a protective style, you are putting some kind of manipulation on to your hair. To divide and part your hair causes manipulation. Consider increasing the amount of time that you are keeping your protective style in and see how your hair reacts to that.

4) Do the right protective style for your hair- For example, if you have hair that is more delicate and doesn’t react well to manipulation, then you might opt for twist instead of braids. Just twist your hair under a wig. Sometimes it takes time to learn which style is good for your hair. But be willing to take the hairstyle down if you feel that it is causing a lot of tension to your real hair. I say it always that losing your edges is not worth whatever style that you have made.

5) You need to keep the actual weight of the protective style in mind. If you have finer and more delicate hair, ask yourself if this protective hairstyle is going to be too heavy for my hair.

6) It is possible to have good looking protective style without hurting yourself. Look for a hairstylist that does not put a lot of tension on your hair. Doing this also takes time and patience in order to know which stylist works best for you or not.
